Day 1: Cusco - Chachabamba - Wiñaywayna - Machu Picchu.
We begin the Legendary Special Inca Trail with a morning pick-up from your hotel to transfer you to the Ollantaytambo train station (depending on the train departure time). Then, we travel by train to km 104 (2,200 m / 7,218 ft), approximately 1 hour.
Here begins our exciting adventure, passing over the bridge across the Sacred River or Urubamba River. After a checkpoint, 15 minutes later, we reach the Chachabamba archaeological site. After visiting, we continue the trek for 4 hours through ascending steps to the Inca site of Wiñaywayna (2,650 m / 8,694 ft). Along the way, we observe the Sacred Valley, waterfalls, and various orchids in the semi-tropical forest. The name Wiñaywayna comes from a beautiful orchid found in the area, meaning “Forever Young” in Spanish. It features over 20 buildings, including the Temple of the Rainbow, also known as the Temple of Fertility.
We then continue for two hours on the second part of the trail to Inti Punku - Sun Gate (2,720 m / 8,924 ft), which in Inca times served as the entry control to the Machu Picchu Citadel. From here, you get your first view and an impressive panoramic vista of the enigmatic Machu Picchu (2,400 m / 7,873 ft).
We then descend for about 40 minutes to the world wonder, Machu Picchu. After a brief rest, we head down to Aguas Calientes (2,160 m / 7,087 ft) and check into our hotel for the night.
If desired, you have the option to visit the hot springs. For those who enjoy dancing or having drinks at a bar, Aguas Calientes offers a wide variety of bars and restaurants.
